Festive Talks: The Therapeutic Potential of Magic Mushrooms

Info & tickets: http://bit.ly/2AD09l7
Venue: Amersham Arms, New Cross
Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.

Hallucinogenic drugs in a hospital clinic? Tripping as treatment?

Scientists at some of the world's most prestigious universities are studying single psychedelic therapy sessions to treat severe mental health conditions. Initial results suggesting mushrooms can bring immediate and long-lasting relief have captured headlines worldwide. But what do these mushroom sessions consist of and how do they work? A psychologist and participant from the ‘Psilocybin for depression study’ at Imperial College take you step by step through the psychedelic treatment journey. You will learn about the history of psychedelics as treatments for mental distress, the current research studies, the content of sessions, and what participants say about how this unique intervention changed their lives.

Dr Rosalind Watts is a clinical psychologist in the Psychedelic Research Group at Imperial College (led by Robin Carhart-Harris), where the first modern study looking at psilocybin as a treatment for depression took place.
Rosalind was a "trip-sitter" for participants in this study, and has published research exploring participant accounts of the impact of psilocybin, focusing on the theme of 'increased connection to self, others, and the world'. She is now developing training for therapists in the upcoming psilocybin study at Imperial, and pondering on the potential of psychedelics to help heal a disconnected world.

M.I.N.D

M.I.N.D is a London based progressive rock metal band, formed by the lead guitarist Andreia Gomez.

In early 2009 she recorded a demo of original compositions and set out to form the band. With influences from 70's prog, world music, film scores, fusion and metal, the result was an aggressive yet melodic sound. Exploring rhythmic and melodic concepts, using advanced instrumental techniques whilst keeping an element of simplicity, is the essence of M.I.N.D's music. Within a few months they won Total Rock Radio's 'Best New and Unsigned Band of 2009' and soon after played the Unsigned stage of Ermal Metal Festival (Sepultura, Blind Guardian, Textures, Obituary, etc..)

M.I.N.D regrouped in 2016 to revamp the old material and write new one. They're now self producing their debut album, each song being released independently as a single. The concept of the band is the human mind and the nature of conscious awareness. This is expressed not only through the music and lyrics, but themed artwork and video productions incorporated in their live shows.

The Complete Stone Roses (Stone Roses Tribute Act)

The Complete Stone Roses are one of the UK’s most well-known, most seen and most successful tribute bands. Selling out venues across the UK and Ireland regularly, they have helped to carry on the music of one of the UK’s most influential bands - The Stone Roses.
The Stone Roses played a pivotal role in the history of the UK’s indie music scene. Famous hits like Fools Gold, I Am The Resurrection and I Wanna Be Adored are as recognisable now as were the heyday of Madchester and the Hacienda, the cultural icons from which the original band were born.
The Complete Stone Roses play to acclaim from fans themselves, the press, and even original Stone Roses band members. Stone Roses bass player Mani has not only just appeared as a warm up DJ for the band on the odd occasion but has also played onstage with them as their guest bassist playing She Bangs The Drums on more than a few times when he was touring about with the band. Mani says "they do our songs real justice. At times, they play even better than we did".
They have also performed alongside Peter Hook (New Order), Clint Boon & Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets) and the legendary Bez (Happy Mondays), all Manchester legends in their own right and have even created a somewhat celebrity fan-base with artist’s such as Chris Helme, Stuart Fletcher and Andy Watts (the seahorses) Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Rick Witter (Shed 7), Andy Couzens (The Stone Roses), Richard Fearless (Death In Vegas) and Shane MacGowan (The Pogues) who each, individually over the last few years, have either appeared as a support DJ/Guest for the band or have attended one of their gigs purely as a fan of stone roses music being played to perfection in a live environment.

Mega Ran

Mega Ran

Random, aka Mega Ran, aka RandomBeats... Teacher, Rapper, Hero.
When LA Weekly said that Ran’s “fanbase and niche audiences are growing at a rate not seen since Tech N9ne,” they meant it. A former middle school teacher, Mega Ran (formerly Random) blends education, hip-hop and gaming in amazing new ways, penetrating the farthest reaches of the galaxy with his unique rhyme style and electric performances.
Ran cut his teeth in the city of Philadelphia as a moonlighting emcee and producer, performing, freestyle rapping, producing and later engineering at a studio. After relocating to Phoenix, competing in the Scribble Jam emcee battle championships and taking an early exit, Ran almost quit before he was even started, when a creative lightning bolt struck, and a fire was lit.
Various video game developer co-signs and admiration from the genre’s toughest critics have led to placements in TV, movies, university coursework, and of course, games. Random’s music and story have been shared on stages across the world, on television (ABC/NBC News, ESPN, Portlandia, Tosh.O, WWE Wrestling) and in leading music, gaming and tech publications, print and online.
Today, Random is no longer a teacher by title, but maintains a rigorous touring and recording schedule, traveling the world to entertain and educate through the gift of rhyme. With over 3 million YouTube views and a legion of smart art fans he calls “Team Mega” beside him, the future looks brighter than ever.

One of the first British policemen to work closely with the FBI Behavioural Science Unit in Quantico, Virginia, he has interviewed over 70 of the world’s worst serial killers and mass murderers to gain insight into their psyche.

Join Paul, to hear some of the more controversial conversations he had with Britain’s and the World’s most terrifying killers. Hear why the Yorkshire Ripper was ‘scared’ of him. Learn, what drove Robert Maudsley, the UK’s real life hannibal lechter, to kill, and why he’s kept in an ‘all glass’ cell. This is a truly eyeopening and entertaining talk, that covers twelve stories and interviews. He has recently had published his first crime fiction novel, Revenge of The Malakim, book one of the Grooming Parlour trilogy.

Moon: a Work-In-Progress (feat. Good Kids + Yuriko Kotani)

FREE COMEDY FREE LAUGHS

Season’s Greetings, London! Sketchwriting children of the regional backwaters MOON are doing a work-in-progress.

Following their virgin voyage trawling trendy comedy clubland, the M6's favourite sons turn their gaze to that Moby Dick of showbusiness, AN ACTUAL SHOW D: O:

To hammer this into relief like the blacksmith ancestors they sometimes claim to have, they're coming south of the river to the AMERSHAM ARMS, where they can dignify sketches about quiz shows and oil rigs with oodles of New Cross Cool. Yes, much of the interior decor there has been DELIBERATELY DISTRESSED.

Ladies and Gentleman, Jack and Josh are proud to present a Moon WIP. And they're not alone...

YURIKO KOTANI is a UK-based Japanese comedian who has had tongues wagging since her triumph at the BBC New Comedy Awards in 2015. Very much one of the hottest damn comics on the scene, and will be previewing some of her good new stuff.

Brummie Bad Boys GOOD KIDS will also be joining the party via the Virgin Trains service to Euston, and probably after that the Northern Line to London Bridge, where they'll be getting the Southern Rail service to New Cross. These keen comedy raconteurs will bring us tales of the Midlands, home of Shakespeare and Jamelia, who once came to speak at Josh's school so there's added poignance there.

ENTRY WILL BE FREE and THE BAR WILL BE CHEAP (for London)

Stay tuned. Up the Villa, and the Toffeemen.
