ABOUT

THE CURATOR

JOSHUA FREDDIE VAUGHAN, ARTIST AND WRITER, IS THE CURATOR AND EVENTS MANAGER OF TAKE COURAGE GALLERY. BASED IN LEWISHAM, VAUGHAN IS HAS WORKED IN THE ARTS SECTOR FOR SEVERAL YEARS, RUNNING SEVERAL ARTS AND PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS, MOST RECENTLY CULMINATING IN EXCHANGE PROJECT, A NOMADIC CURATORIAL PROGRAM THAT FINDS IT’S NEW HOME IN THE RENOWNED TAKE COURAGE GALLERY. VAUGHAN’S INTERESTS AS A CURATOR ARE DIVERSE.

HE IS BUILDING A PROGRAMME OF ARTS EVENTS CENTRED AROUND UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS, RELATIONAL ARTS PRACTICES, THE ROLE OF NOVELTY AND APPARENT IMPOSSIBILITY IN ART, PSYCHOANALYSIS AND CRAFT PRACTICES. HE IS ALSO INTERESTED IN THE QUALITY OF INTERFACE BETWEEN PUBLIC AND ARTIST AND THE MANY APPROACHES THAT MAY BE TAKEN BY A CURATOR TO MAKE ART ACCESSIBLE WHILST NOT COMPROMISING THE INTEGRITY OF THE WORK.

HE WORKS WITH ELX ART, DRIVING CHANGE WITH ART, EXCHANGE PROJECT, FLUX, THE LONDON GROUP, FREE PAINTERS AND SCULPTORS SOCIETY AND OTHERS. AS AN ARTIST HE IS DEEPLY INTERESTED IN HOW HUMANS CONSTRUCT MYTHS AND FAIRYTALES TO DIRECT THEIR SOCIAL INTERACTIONS, HOW HUMAN DESIRE IS FORMED AND DIRECTED, AND PSYCHOANALYSIS.

VISUALLY AND FORMALLY, HE EXPLORES THE EMERGENCE OF ORDER FROM CHAOTIC FORMS, SYMBOLIC IMAGERY RELATING TO ARCHETYPAL SUBJECTS THAT ARE UNIVERSALLY SHARED (THOUGH INDIVIDUALLY INTERPRETED) AND THAT WHICH IS APPARENTLY IMPOSSIBLE.

VAUGAN STUDIED AT CENTRAL ST. MARTINS AND CITY AND GUILDS OF LONDON ART SCHOOL.
